Aluminium industry cautiously optimistic for 2017

Developments in business activity in the German aluminium sector have been mixed so far this year.


Trimet: new alloy variant for use in automobile manufacturing

At ALUMINIUM 2016, Trimet Aluminium in Essen is introducing a new variant of the EN AW-6082 alloy that offers high resistance to intergranular corrosion. It opens up new application potential for aluminium wiring in automobile manufacturing.


Constellium: New aluminium sheet finishing line for auto bodies

Constellium has opened a new finishing line for aluminium sheet production in Neuf-Brisach in the Alsace region. With the new line, in which it has invested 180 million euros, Constellium intends to satisfy the automotive industry's growing demand for aluminium auto-body sheet.



At ALUMINIUM 2016, which will take place from 29 November to 1 December 2016 in Düsseldorf, the GDA will be presenting itself at its own exhibition booth (hall 13 / booth K15). There, the GDA will offer information about its services and provide neutral and comprehensive product advice on applications for aluminium.


Dr.-Ing. Walter Hueck passes away

Dr.-Ing. Walter Hueck, former President of the Gesamtverband der Aluminiumindustrie e.V. (GDA), passed away in October of this year at the age of 82. Dr. Hueck was President of the GDA from 1995 to 2001, and had spent the time before that shaping and influencing the work of German aluminium industry associations in various capacities and on various committees in the aluminium branch.


HAI acquires profile production from Schletter

Effective October 2016 the Austrian aluminium specialist Hammerer Aluminium Industries (HAI) will assume control of the existing production line and the production of aluminium extrusion profiles from the solar assembly manufacturer Schletter, based in the Bavarian town of Kirchdorf.


Choice of materials halves weight but not performance

In areas like vehicles, low weight can ensure a maximum in driving enjoyment or dynamic performance at low consumption. Aluminium-titanium lightweight bearings offer the same performance values as standard bearing technology used to date, but they do it at half the weight and at a moderate price.


Trimet grows and focuses on more flexible production

During the 2015/2016 financial year (30 June) Trimet Aluminium SE increased sales of aluminium products. At eight sites its roughly 3,000 employees produced about 775,000 tonnes of aluminium and cast products – five percent more than the previous year.


Aluminium aerosol cans report clear gains worldwide

The member companies of AEROBAL could be more than happy with developments in shipments around the world. In the first half of the year, they boosted output of aluminium aerosol cans by a remarkable 4.5 per cent compared with the corresponding period a year earlier to about 2.9 billion cans.


World Aluminium Aerosol Can Award 2016

For its competition to find this year’s best aluminium aerosol cans, AEROBAL, the International Organisation of Aluminium Aerosol Container Manufacturers, once again invited entries from all over the world. AEROBAL’s member companies account for about 70 per cent of all aluminium aerosol cans produced worldwide.


Dr. Hinrich Mählmann reelected as president of the GDA

Dr. Hinrich Mählmann (59), president of the Gesamtverband der Aluminiumindustrie e.V. (GDA) in Düsseldorf, has been elected again by the general assembly of the GDA for a further three-year term of office. As vice presidents again elected is Oliver Höll, Karl Höll GmbH, as well as Kjetil Ebbesberg, Hydro Aluminium.


Packaging market still stable in 2015

No big changes compared to the same period of the previous year – that is the conclusion drawn by the Joint Committee of German Packaging Manufacturers (GADV) with regard to the annual assessment for 2015. Sales in packaging materials rose by 1.1 percent in 2015 to around EUR 32 billion.


Aluminium innovation gives stronger and lighter ship hulls

Sapa has installed at its plant in Finspång, Sweden the largest friction stir welding (FSW) machine in Europe and one of the largest in the world. The new large-scale FSW machine offers single-sided and double-sided welding of aluminium profiles with material thicknesses up to 16 mm, produced as 18 by 3.5-meter panels.


Business activity in aluminium sector mixed

Business activity in the German aluminium sector has been mixed so far this year. Semis producers managed to increase their production in the first half of 2016, but declines were reported by aluminium smelters, founders and converters. There continues to be cautious optimism regarding growth expectations for 2016.

The mat "emco Ecoline Pionier" consists of functional layers of materials lying in robust aluminium profiles. The entrance mat – from yarn to aluminium profiles – can be completely recycled without exception.

SmartActive is a new and lasting finish from Schüco for window systems and handles made of aluminium. It provides the kind of long-lasting antimicrobial protection on frames and handles that is in demand particularly in clinics, care homes, kindergartens and public buildings.

On the way to the finish line at the Olympic Games, for cyclists every gram counts. Because, the less weight that has to be set in motion, the better the acceleration. Aluminium components are particularly lightweight and especially tailored to suit the needs of each of the individual German track cyclists.


New process joins sheet metals better together

Scientists at the University of Stuttgart have developed two new variants of friction stir welding. For the first time this will make it possible to use the friction stir welding process to efficiently and strongly join steel or aluminium sheets of different thicknesses.
