Art Deco meets green building

In Hamburg, the Handelskammer Innovations Campus (HKIC) is attracting attention. The building, situated in a construction lot nestled between banks at Adolphsplatz in the Nikolai quarter. One of the prominent features of the facade of the HKIC is the aluminium window elements.


Former Aleris extrusion division now called ST Extruded Products

At the end of February Aleris concluded the sales of its aluminium extrusion division to the Japanese company Sankyo Tateyama, and its business area for the recycling and manufacture of specific alloys in North America and Europe.


Fraunhofer IPA lowers energy consumption required for anodising

A new anodising method should save around 40 per cent of the energy costs of surface treating for light metals. The new technique was developed by the Electroplating Department of the Fraunhofer Institute for Production Engineering and Automation (IPA) in Stuttgart.


Call for papers for the European Aluminium Congress 2015

GDA is organizing the European Aluminium Congress 2015 in Dusseldorf with the topic "Aluminium - Building the Future" on 23 and 24 November 2015 in close cooperation with the Swiss Aluminium Association ( and the Austrian Non-Ferrous Metals Federation - Austrian Federal Economic Chamber (WKO).


Bernd Schäfer is the new Chairman of the GDA Aluminium Semis Division

Bernd Schäfer, Alcoa Global Rolled Products´ Commercial Vice President for Commercial Transportation and Industrial has been appointed new Chairman of the Aluminium Semis Division within the GDA . Frank Busenbecker, General Manager of Erbslöh Aluminium GmbH, was elected Vice Chairman of the Division.


Positive development of business activity in aluminium sector

The signs are pointing to growth: the German aluminium industry clearly outpaced economic growth as a whole last year and it is also expecting the economic trend to be stable in 2015. Some 1,130,100 tonnes of aluminium were produced in Germany in 2014.


Hydro invests in sorting technology for recycling

Hydro Aluminium is continuing to expand its recycling business and is taking over WMR Recycling GmbH (WMR) in Dormagen. Hydro has been working with the former owners of WMR since 2013 in the form of a reprocessing agreement, in which multiple recycling plants of Hydro are supplied with sorted and shredded scrap from various sources and products.


SGL Group and Hydro partnering to develop new cathode technology

The SGL Group and the Norwegian aluminium concern Hydro want to exploit potential in the manufacturing process of primary aluminium to save energy. The aim is to jointly develop new kinds of cathodes in this three-year project.


New aluminium tank system for dust collection plants

A new tank system made of drawn aluminium tube for use in dust collection plants allows high pulse volumes and is corrosion resistant. The tank’s innovative aluminium profile combined with the patented clamp construction allow high flow rates and high volumes per pulse.


New profile cooling system at Gerhardi Alutechnik

Gerhardi Alutechnik is implementing a new kind of cooling concept for the extrusion of aluminium profiles. The aim of the pilot project is to raise energy and material efficiency during the production of aluminium profiles. The innovative project is receiving support from the Federal Environment Ministry (BMU).


New connector elements for aluminium profile technology

With a new anchor connector, two aluminium profiles can be connected together without having to modify them. The new joining technology allows the quick and easy creation of profile constructions without any interfering contours. The anchor connector is inserted into the drill hole and locked with a screw.


Compact, robust, light – the world’s first touch-sensing prosthetic hand

The start-up company Vincent Systems in Karlsruhe has developed and marketed the world’s first touch-sensing prosthetic hand – and a lightweight construction that uses aluminium is an integral part of it.


Dr. Klaus Vieregge heads Aluminium R&D at Hydro

Dr. Klaus Vieregge is the new head of research and development in Bonn of the aluminium company Hydro. He follows in the footsteps of Prof. Dr. Wolfgang Schneider, who retired at the end of December after more than 34 years at Hydro R&D in Bonn – the last 12 of which as its head.


Franziska Erdle is new managing director of WVM

As of 1 February the lawyer Franziska Erdle (42) is the new managing director of the WVM-Wirtschaftsvereinigung Metalle e.V., Berlin. She follows in the footsteps of Martin Kneer (67), who has left the association after 16 years. The successor was resolved already at the WVM board meeting in May 2014.


Constellium supplies aluminium structural parts for the Ford F-150

Constellium will supply the US car-maker Ford with high-strength aluminium structural parts for the new Ford F-150 pick-up. In addition to the aluminium concerns Alcoa and Novelis, Constellium is one of the largest suppliers of Ford for these components of the F-150.


Trimet France commissions continuous caster

Following a test phase of several months, Trimet Aluminium has fully commissioned its vertical continuous caster at its Saint-Jean-de-Maurienne plant in France. With annual production capacity of up to 60,000 tonnes of rolling ingots, the caster adds to the range of products at the plant.


Strong increase of 30 per cent in beverage can sales in Germany

The beverage can is more popular than ever here at home. With 1.86 billion cans sold in 2014, sales in Germany rose an impressive 30.4 per cent compared to last year.


Hydro begins construction of its new car production line

The Norwegian aluminium concern Hydro has begun construction on a new, modern car production line for light sheet metal for car bodies at its plant in Grevenbroich. he new plant is Hydro’s reaction to the rising demand and the anticipated market growth in aluminium lightweight parts for vehicle bodies.
