Aluminium was first used in this field of application around the turn of the twentieth century. Dürkopp presented a small sports car with an aluminium body at an international motorcar exhibition in Berlin in 1899.

At first, it was aluminium car bodies that were made of aluminium. In the course of the technical development, engine components and structural parts were added. As a result of the ever-increasing need to reduce weight, aluminium now accounts for nine per cent by weight of a motorcar, and the trend is upwards.
