The Aluminium Industry

Important Source of Inspiration for Business and Society

With a turnover of 14.9 billion euros and 74,000 employees in 2008, the aluminium industry is an important economic factor in Germany. There are over 600 companies in the whole value-added chain of aluminium, from the extraction of the metal and production of semi fabricates through to finished items for almost every branch of industry.
The use of aluminium benefits all concerned – the state, the economy and the population – both economically and ecologically. The aluminium industry therefore makes a major contribution to technical development and to improving the living standard in Germany.

Success Story of the Aluminium Industry

Aluprofil6
The demand for aluminium is increasing year by year. Many applications and developments require a material that is light and yet strong, demands that aluminium can fulfil optimally. In addition, the metal is extremely versatile. Consequently aluminium is to be found in all branches of the economy, from packaging, building materials and transport and transportation through to mechanical engineering and plant manufacturing. Recycling without almost any loss of material strengthens the long-term benefit of aluminium in the product loop.

Producing Locally – Dealing Globally

Alukarosserie
The extraction, processing and use of aluminium is a global process. Starting with the mining of the raw material and going through to the processing of products such as drinks packaging or car bodies. Aluminium brings together capabilities from many parts of the world in a multifunctional material with excellent sustainability.

There are numerous companies based in Germany as well a large number of subsidiaries of foreign companies. The sector does not only provide work and income for those directly employed in it, thereby ensuring that, by global comparison, their families have a high standard of living and social security; many people working for downstream companies and equipment suppliers as well as in retailing and service industries outside the aluminium industry also profit from their purchasing power.

On top of this, with their investments abroad, German aluminium companies are promoting the economic and social development in structurally weak and industrially underdeveloped countries.

Innovation – Distinguishing Feature of the German Aluminium Industry

About 40 per cent of all German production is exported. A sign of innovative strength, which is based on the experience of capable employees. Whether the ‘three-litre car’ with its fuel consumption of three litres per 100 kilometres, more effective transmission of electricity through aluminium power lines or façade systems that use resources particularly sparingly, the aluminium industry provides inspiration and is continuously pressing ahead with new developments.
