Aluminium production in Germany
Production statistics are subdivided according to the stages in the value-added chain. In this section you will therefore find statistics for the production of primary and secondary aluminium, for downstream sectors such as aluminium castings and aluminium semi-finished products, as well as subsequent processing to aluminium foil, tubes, aerosol cans and beverage cans and aluminium powder.
Production of primary and secondary aluminium in Germany
The four German primary aluminium smelters produced a total of 291,700 tonnes of primary aluminium in 2009, while the secondary smelters produced 560,800 tonnes of recycled aluminium.

Production of aluminium semi-finished products in Germany
The German plants for semi-finished products continuously recorded significant growth rates from 2004 to 2007. In 2008 the production decrease about 4.3%. In 2009 the production was further decline about 16.3%. Total production of aluminium semi-finished products (rolled products, extruded products, wire and forgings) was 2,02 million tonnes in 2009.

Processing of Aluminium
Processing of aluminium takes place mainly in rolling mills, extrusion
plants or shape-casting foundries. Of importance here are the
requirements with respect to shape and the subsequent application. Only
a small force is required to deform aluminium plastically and virtually
every joining technology can be used with the metal. Thanks to the
latest technology, aluminium can also be welded and permanently bonded
more easily, thus opening up even more fields of application.
Glossary
Semi-finished products: Semi-finished products, also called "semis", are wire, profiles, rod and bar, and tube made from aluminium that are used to manufacture end products.
Casting: Aluminium castings are made using different processes depending on the requirements. Compared with the casting of metals of higher density, benefits are high dimensional accuracy and large weight savings.
