Aluminium production worldwide

The global demand for aluminium has increased markedly in recent years, not least as a result of the dynamic economic developments in Asia. The figures given here provide an overview of the production of aluminium worldwide.

Production of primary aluminium

Bauxite mining
Bauxite mining
In 2009, 37 million tonnes of primary aluminium were produced worldwide. Following a constant increase in production since 2001 there was a 6.8% decrease in production in 2009 compared with 2008.

During 2009, there was a downturn in production of 16.2% in Europe. Also America produced 14% less of primary aluminium than the previous year. The production of primary aluminium tends upwards in Asia with growth of 1% in 2009.

Production of secondary aluminium

Recycling
The production of secondary (recycled) aluminium reported an decrease of 10,6% in 2009 compared with the previous year. This is due to the development in America (-5%), Asia (-5.3%) and Europe (-18.5%).

Of the 8 million tonnes of secondary aluminium produced worldwide in 2009, some 48% was attributable to America 28% to Europe and 23% to Asia.
