Winner of Austria’s Aluminium in Architecture Award 2010 chosen

22.12.10 The winner of this year’s Aluminium in Architecture Award in Austria is the Vienna-based architectural practice SUE. It was chosen for its rebuilding of municipal offices in the market town of Ottensheim in Upper Austria. The award was made for the seventh time this year.

Recycling of aluminium packaging climbs to record level

15.12.10 The recycling rate for aluminium packaging in Germany, which was already at a high level, increased still further in 2009 to a new record. Of the 91,000 tonnes of aluminium used in packaging last year, 74,900 tonnes were recycled. This is equivalent to a recycling rate of 82.3 per cent.

German aluminium industry enters new decade in confident mood

09.12.10 The German aluminium industry was extremely dynamic in 2010 and is now enjoying a steady upswing. “The ever stronger upward trend that started in the middle of 2009 continued in the first nine months of 2010 so that the industry’s expectations have been clearly exceeded in certain areas this year,” reported Friedrich W. Brökelmann, President of GDA at a recent press conference.

Aluminium ‘Hercules’ taking shape above Gelsenkirchen

06.12.10 The crowning touch to the Ruhr area being Europe’s capital of culture in 2010 is now taking shape: from mid-December an 18-metre high aluminium statue – Hercules of Gelsenkirchen – will stand guard 90 metres above the ground on the roof of the former Nordstern colliery, which is now an industrial museum.

(GDA) is organising the EAC European Aluminium Congress 2011 on 22-23 November 2011 in Düsseldorf; this year’s motto is ‘Technologies for the Aluminium Industry’. GDA is now inviting suggestions for topics to be covered and presentations. The deadline for submission is 1 March 2011.

08.11.10 Following a construction period of four months and an investment of 1.2 million euros, Trimet Aluminium AG has commissioned a new ingot-casting unit at its plant in Gelsenkirchen. The new unit considerably increases the capacity of the Trimet plant, the plant can now process about 50,000 annually.

Semis production on the up

14.09.10 The German aluminium semis industry is again looking optimistically to the future. In the first half of 2010, the 34 German aluminium semis producers were up and running again and increased their production by 30.3 per cent to 1,232,200 tonnes. The semis producers operate at 47 locations in Germany and employ some 16,000 people.

Hydro starts up new anodising in Rackwitz

12.07.10 Hydro Aluminium has inaugurated its new 14.5-million euro anodising plant in Rackwitz, Germany, one of the largest in Europe. The new plant is capable of anodising up to four million square metres of extruded aluminium a year. Hydro Aluminium Extrusion Deutschland is thus now Europe’s largest supplier of anodised aluminium profiles.

Aluminium gas bottles offer competitive advantages

12.07.10 A new type of aluminium gas cylinder designed for use with forklift trucks from Brühl-based Propan Rheingas is considerably lighter than conventional steel LPG cylinders. The so-called ‘Gasolite-drive’ aluminium bottle fulfils the technical requirements for aircraft construction and offers about 27 per cent more capacity despite its total weight being reduced by three kilograms to eleven kilograms.

IKB expecting slight increase in aluminium production in 2010

21.06.10 The Düsseldorf-based IKB bank is expecting a slight increase in global aluminium production in 2010. Following a downturn in the production of primary aluminium in 2009 to only 36.8m tonnes, there are signs of recovery to about 38.5m m tonnes this year. This is the assessment reached by IKB in its report on raw materials prices for June 2010.

17.06.10 ALUMINIUM, one of Europe’s most successful industrial fairs, moves from the Ruhr to the Rhine. Starting in 2012, the world’s leading trade fair of the aluminium industry will be held at the Düsseldorf Exhibition Centre. Scottish trains utilising lightweight aluminium ceiling units

29.03.10 Deutsche Mechatronics (DTMT) based in Mechernich near Cologne, Germany, is supplying the aluminium roof construction for new trains for the Scottish train company First ScotRail. DTMT is manufacturing not only the actual aluminium construction but is also supplying the units ready-to-install and equipped with air conditioning and telecommunications technology.

Eduard Hueck commissions new extrusion press

22.03.10 Eduard Hueck GmbH & Co. KG of Lüdenscheid commissioned its new 27-MN extrusion press at the beginning of March. The 2,700 tonne press has a billet heating furnace and the necessary downstream equipment and replaces a 16-MN press that was built in 1989 and which has already been dismantled.

Slight decline in aluminium packaging in 2009

08.03.10 espite a slight decline in volumes in 2009, the producers of aluminium packaging managed to cope relatively well with the economic crisis. Overall, the production of packaging made from or using aluminium recorded a slight fall in 2009. “In 2010 our sector is expecting a slight upward trend similar to that of the general economic forecasts" explains Stefan Glimm, managing director of GDA in Düsseldorf.

01.03.10 The Borbecker Halblang Project is one of the many projects for the European Culture Capital Ruhr 2010 programme. There are 21 schools and over 400 schoolchildren from the Borbeck area of Essen participating in this interactive project. Aluminium lighting columns replacing steel
