The closing date for the European Aluminium Award 2010 has been extended to 15 July 2010. The competition, which is being held for the seventh time this year, looks for efficient and forward-looking uses of aluminium as a material. Prizes are awarded for products and projects that use aluminium as a material in an innovative manner. There are a total of six prizes in two categories. The Industrial Products category covers applications involving aluminium in the fields of Automotive & Transport, Building & Construction, Mechanical Engineering & Electronics and Production Techniques. In this category, the jury will be looking for aluminium components that have a positive influence on the final product. By contrast, in the Consumer Products category there will be prizes in the Design and Innovation sectors.
The jury will also be awarding two special prizes this year: the Overall Jury Award will go to the best entry in the area of environment, sustainability and energy efficiency. There will also be a Young Designers Prize for the first time this year. Here the jury is looking for creative ideas and new solutions, in particular from students and designers under the age of 30.
The European Aluminium Award is presented every two years and is aimed at engineers, including those engaged in structural design and product development, designers and their principals. It is organised by Aluminium Centrum in Houten, the Netherlands, together with EAA European Aluminium Association, Brussels, GDA Gesamtverband der Aluminiumindustrie, Düsseldorf, and the organiser of the ALUMINIUM trade fair, Reed Exhibitions Deutschland GmbH. Four major players from the aluminium sector are sponsoring the awards: Alcoa, Aleris, Hydro and Rio Tinto Alcan. Judging will be carried out by an international jury of experts chaired by Prof Laurens Katgerman of Delft University of Technology.
The products and projects nominated will be on display at ALUMINIUM 2010; the awards ceremony will take place as part of the ‘ALUMINIUM Night’ reception on 14 September 2010.
