Audi A7 Sportback: light and elegant thanks to aluminium
30.08.10 -
With its sporty character and innovative technology, the new Audi A7 Sportback is heading for a new market segment. The large five-door vehicle has the sporting elegance of a coupé and the comfort of a saloon and is practical like an Avant. True to the well-known Audi tradition, the car body contains numerous components made from aluminium. The body of the A7 Sportback sets new standards with its light weight – the steel–aluminium composite body is about 15 per cent lighter than a comparable all-steel body and thus takes pole position when compared with its competitors. By way of example one can consider the 3.0 litre TDI version. The basic version has a total weight of 1,695 kilograms. The low weight is attributable to the marque’s groundbreaking lightweight construction technology, which intelligently combines different materials.
More than 20 percent of the vehicle body is made of lightweight aluminium, a material with which Audi has experience that no other manufacturer can match. The strut mounts in the front of the car are aluminium castings; the strut brace and cross-members behind the front and rear bumpers are aluminium profiles. All add-on parts, such as front side-walls, bonnet, rear hatch, doors, and bulkhead and cross-member in boot, are made of aluminium sheet.
The body of the Audi A7 Sportback combines low weight with high rigidity and supreme strength. It thus provides the basis for sportily precise handling, high crash safety and vibrational comfort on board.
