Apple iPad: the aluminium-styled PC revolution

Apple ipad
08.02.10 -
Apple has a reputation for being one of the most innovative computer companies. And it almost goes without saying that Apple computers regularly catch the eye with their unusual designs. In addition, the company is committed to using aluminium in its products completely in keeping with the Apple philosophy of designing and creating ecologically compatible products – for its new iPad too.

According to the company, the so-called Apple iPad tablet that has now been revealed is a revolutionary device for browsing the web, reading and sending emails, enjoying photos, watching videos, listening to music, playing games or reading e-books. The device is only 13.4 mm thick and weighs just 680 grams – thinner and lighter than any laptop or netbook. The 9.7-inch LED-backlit display with its ‘soft’ keyboard makes it easy to use.

The iPad owes its characteristic design to an enclosure made with aluminium profiles that incorporates the high-definition Multi-Touch display. An American analyst has estimated the production costs for the aluminium-profile enclosure to be about 25 US dollars. The choice of lightweight aluminium for the enclosure coupled with its noble and unpretentious design turns the iPad into aesthetic pleasure.

The device comes standard with an energy-efficient LED-backlit display that is mercury-free and made with arsenic-free glass. The iPad contains no brominated flame retardants and is completely PVC-free.
According to the VFF, the domestic market still has huge potential: there are still some 340 million window units in need of modernisation. The German market comprises about 7,200 window installation companies with some 100,000 employees. Turnover in 2008 was about 8.5 billion euros. For residential buildings, plastic is the preferred frame material whereas aluminium windows dominate when it comes to public buildings and offices. Overall, PVC has about a 56 per cent share of the market, wood has 16 per cent, wood/metal seven per cent and metal 21 per cent. Aluminium’s share of the metal segment is over 90 per cent.
