Deoxidation

In steelmaking, the oxygen content has to be reduced to such an extent that solidification occurs without the formation of bubbles in the solid metal. Deoxidising is carried out in a ladle or in an electric arc furnace. One differentiates between deoxidation via the gaseous phase, precipitation deoxidation (by adding elements whose oxygen affinity is greater than that of the iron; these include magnesium, manganese, silicon, aluminium, carbon and calcium) and diffusion deoxidation, also in combination with synthetic slags.
